A knocked-out permanent tooth can be frightening, especially when it happens suddenly after a fall, sports injury, accident, or blow to the face. However, what you do immediately after the injury can make a real difference. If a permanent tooth has been completely displaced from its socket, treat it as a dental emergency and seek professional care as quickly as possible.

Stay Calm and Find the Tooth

The first step is to locate the tooth. Pick it up carefully by the crown—the part that is normally visible in your mouth. Avoid touching the root because the delicate tissues attached to it may be important when the dentist attempts to save the tooth.

Clean It Carefully

If the tooth has fallen onto the ground and is visibly dirty, gently rinse it with clean water. Do not scrub, brush, scrape or disinfect the root. Even though your instinct may be to clean the tooth thoroughly, aggressive cleaning can damage the cells on its root surface.

Can You Put the Tooth Back?

If it is a permanent tooth and you feel comfortable doing so, you may gently place it back into its original socket. Hold it by the crown and try to position it correctly without applying force.
If the tooth does not go back easily, don't force it. Keep it moist and head straight to a dentist.

Keep the Tooth Moist

A tooth that has been knocked out should not be allowed to become dry. If you cannot place it back in its socket, keep it in milk or a suitable tooth-preservation solution while travelling to the dental clinic.
Avoid wrapping the tooth in tissue or storing it somewhere dry.

Don't Wait for the Pain to Start

A knocked-out tooth requires urgent dental assessment even if the injured person feels relatively comfortable. The dentist will examine the tooth, the socket and surrounding tissues and determine whether the tooth can be repositioned and stabilised.
The sooner you receive professional treatment, the better the opportunity to preserve the natural tooth. Even if more than 30 minutes have already passed, don't give up—seek dental care immediately.
